Contract R&D

Wear and friction are complex phenomena which depend on several parameters such as temperature, roughness, speed, loads, geometry, etc. Our approach is to choose the right scale and to determine the parameters which have some influence.
Laboratory scale is not always representative and real scale is sometimes over-representative because it incorporates too many parameters which disrupt analysis and understanding.

We provide answers to the most diverse requirements, through work at various stages:

  • Resolution of fault or failure problems: seizure, wear, noise, etc.
  • Improvement of "the existing situation": increasing of performances, of longevity, of output, of operating safety and reliability, of productivity, optimisation of materials, of functions or of processes, etc.
  • Definition of properties and of the package of performances (materials, components, etc.).
  • Help with design or development, for example help with the carrying out of a project, with the development of "products" (in the widest sense of the term),
  • Economic optimisation: actions on materials, manufacturing ranges, simplification of design, of greasing, spacing out of maintenance operations, etc.

Whatever their level, these services apply to the resolution of concrete problems. Their common aim is the making available of industrially utilisable results and recommendations.

Most of our customers in the tribology field are from the automotive, aerospace and energy industries but IREIS also works on consumer goods or in the health field.

Here are 4 examples chosen from 50 years' experience and over 2,000 studies:

AUTOMOTIVE

A particularly resistant design for the shaft/cylinder/cam system of HGVs is necessary in order to guarantee their reliability. By calculations and experiments, IREIS made it possible to help understand the various friction and lubrication regimes on these parts at the top of the engine.

AEROSPATIAL

Fretting is a wear phenomenon caused by low-amplitude vibrations. The aerospace industry is, amongst others, concerned by this problem.
For an aircraft engine manufacturer, IREIS produced specific test benches so as to be able to understand the underlying phenomena and to develop future solutions in terms of materials and surface treatments.

ENERGY

A manufacturer of electric/hydroelectric turbines wished to optimise his material selection instructions, in particular on friction bushings. IREIS tested all the materials on a test bench in order to supply the engineering department with reliable dimensional data.

HEALTH

The IREIS Department is providing its support to CARMAT in the development of a self-contained and implantable artificial heart. IREIS's aim is to optimise the tribological behaviour of this system in order to guarantee its reliability. This partnership has led to the setting of an IREIS laboratory devoted to this area.
